Step 1 – Understanding Your Story
Everyone is different and two people can have a very similar injury, but it can affect them in very different ways. This is because they will have different circumstances that led to the injury and different things going on in their life that will influence their pain.
By understanding your story and any previous injuries you may have had, along with any emotional or lifestyle stressors that you have been through, we can then have a really good understanding of what has led to your problem.
Step 3 – Undo Unwanted Movement Habits
More often than not when you have had an old injury or anything that causes stress on your body, your body will respond by adapting and changing to compensate for the stressor. These adaptations can include limping or moving in a way that uses some muscles more than others. These adaptations can work in the short term, but long term they will catch up on you and will cause problems elsewhere. Back pain is a very common example of this.
So, we want to undo these old movement habits that you may have built up over time and give you back new and more efficient movement habits in order to take the load and strain off certain areas, like your back. this also plays a big part in ensuring the pain does not return.
Step 2 – Find The True Stressor
If you have ever had back pain and gone for a massage or some form of treatment and felt great afterwards only for the pain to return a few days later, then there is a big reason for this. That is because the TRUE STRESSOR of the problem was not addressed.
You see, pain is often the symptom of the problem and not the true cause of the problem. Unless the true stressor is found and addressed, the effects of the treatment will be short lived and the pain will keep returning.
Step 4 – Move Towards Your Ideal Outcome
This comes back to understanding your story because we want to be crystal clear on where you want to get to. What would your life look like if you weren’t in pain? This could mean playing with your grand-kids for example. Been able to bend, twist, lift, pull and turn suddenly confidently and without the fear of ending up in pain.
We work with you and start introducing you gradually to all the movements you need to be able to do, to enjoy your favorite activities and live the life you want to live.
Step 5 – Build Resilience
This is a vital step in our step by step process because we don’t just want to focus on getting you out of pain or even getting you back to where you were before. Why? Because if we finished at that point, there is a risk that the pain may still return. We want you to feel more stronger and resilient so that you feel confident, stable and strong in everyday movements and activities.
We want you to be able to get back to doing some of those activities that you may have felt were gone and beyond you, because you have lived in pain for so long. By building resilience, endurance and strength, this greatly improves your chances of doing so.
Step 6 – Empower You To Live Life To The Full
We want to give you back the confidence to do what you want to do, without worrying about pain. While it may look a long way away at the moment, if you progress through our step by step system and go through the steps in the right way, then you have a great chance of living your life to the full of your ability.
What an happen when you hear of people having a pain-full flare up is that they have been progressed to fast and have skipped steps. At Midlands Physical Therapy we ensure that patients go through the right progressions at the right time, to ensure this doesn’t happen.

We Love To Help People
- Keep Active – whether this means going for a run, going to a fitness class at the gym or playing a round of golf.
- Keep Healthy – everyone knows that you feel better both mentally and physically after been out for a walk in the fresh air, going for a swim or going to the gym.
- Keep away from painkillers – painkillers will not fix your pain, they just mask it. Also, as you will have read in our 6 step process above, the site of pain is often not the true cause of the problem.
- Avoid unnecessary surgery – often surgery can be avoided if the true cause of the problem is found and addressed. Surgery is not an easy road and if it can be avoided, then take that option.
- Find the true cause – it can be very frustrating not knowing why you have pain. At Midlands Physical Therapy we aim to find the true cause of the problem and explain it in a simple and easy to understand way.
